This woodcut is of the St Croix River which runs from northwest Wisconsin south to become the border between Wisconsin and Minnesota until it flows into Mississippi River as one of its major tributaries, at Prescott, Wisconsin. It was one of the first rivers protected by the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968.

This past November, on top of a cliff at Interstate State Park, I stumbled over a scattering of boulders and came to this view across the St Croix River. I was on the Minnesota side, but on the other side is Wisconsin’s own Interstate State Park.

I sat down on a boulder, started sketching, took photos, and thought of doing an edition of woodblock prints of the scene. I started work on it a few weeks ago and finished yesterday, Jan 20. 2026.
