Bird and Bull
Original woodblock print;
5.5”x 6.25”; Edition of 195;
Moose (Alces alces) populations in many habitats have been in decline since about 1990. One of the likely causes of the drop has been the effect of parasites, such as tick infestations, on moose.
A number of bird species have symbiotic relationships with moose, picking and eating ticks and other insects off the backs of moose, deer, and other large animals.
Black-billed Magpies (Pica hudsonia) and Canada Jays (Perisoreus canadensis) are known to take parasites from moose, and Black-capped Chickadees (Poecile atricapillus), shown in this woodcut, feed on a variety of insects in moose habitat.
